Chapter Thirteen

Anna walked back out into the sunlight only to catch her first glimpse of the Vercas. She recoiled in horror. The creature was massive, easily the size of an F-16 fighter jet or larger. Its face and body structure were eerily reminiscent of a pterodactyl, except its skin was the color of ripe cherries, and its head made her think of a great white shark, except for the eyes. It had these long, wide black eyes on either side of its head that just screamed alien life form. It was fucking creepy as hell and the stuff of nightmares. Its wingspan was almost twice the size of D’Vorak’s. He was going to take that thing on.

Did the guy have a death wish?

She searched the skies for her mate and spotted his gray form as he dove straight for the beast from above. Anna emitted a sharp, involuntary cry of fear. He was insane. There was no way he could defeat that thing.

The Vercas swiveled its massive, grotesque head in her direction. Terror skittered along her spine. Surely the creature hadn’t heard her, had it? Surely not. Except, it chomped its gigantic mouth—with rows of razor-sharp teeth capable of tearing the flesh from her bones—in her direction, like it was imagining what she would taste like. To a thing that size, she wouldn’t even be a full meal but an appetizer. Then it altered its flight pattern and flew straight toward her.

Fear exploded in her veins. Anna didn’t think twice about the consequences, only survival. She ran, scrabbling down the side of the mountain as fast as she could go. She found a small trail and followed it as fast as was safe. Her feet slipped and slid over loose gravel.

Wind currents generated by the creature beat against her back, but she kept running. She ran until there was no place left to go. Her breathing harsh and wheezing, she stared out over a precarious, rocky slate ledge with a sheer thousand-foot drop off. She gulped in a breath, trying to still the raging terror.

Fuck. Her story couldn’t end here, on some cliff with no name, on a planet where no one save D’Vorak would even remember her.

But then she stared at her winged death in the face as it approached. A calm settled over her as the bright red skin blotted out the suns.

She raised her hands and positioned her body in a defensive stance. She might go down in this moment. There was the very real possibility of that. But she would be damned if she would do it lying down and quivering in fear. If she was going down, she would do it fighting.

The thing loomed ever closer. The scene slowed down so that Anna felt every rapid, thumping heartbeat, heard every woop-woop-woop of its wings, and all the while, she prayed that her besties had met a kinder fate than she was about to. The creature’s hind talons, with wicked sharp claws that had to be a good foot in length, stretched toward her.
